Hitch Pin/Bike Rack Lock Accessibility for 2015 Subaru WRX EcoHitch

We are receiving a number of questions regarding access to hitch pins, and fitment of bike rack locks on the 2015 Subaru WRX EcoHitch.  Due to the hidden design of EcoHitch behind the rear bumper, people have expressed concern there may not be adequate space around the hitch receiver to easily install and remove these accessories.  There are two options during installation of the EcoHitch that provide simple solutions to these concerns.  They are detailed below:

OPTION 1 (Recommended)

Due to the tight tolerance of the body of the vehicle in relation to the bumper cover it may be required to trim the portion shown in the image below, to allow for easy removal of the knockout panel as well as the ability to easily insert a hitch pin or bike rack lock into the hitch.

Carefully trim the highlighted section shown below.

Option 1 After Trim

As you can see in the photo above, trimming of the plastic panel is located on the bottom of the vehicle and is not visible from the back of the car.

OPTION #2

If Option #1 is not desired, remove the two lower clips shown by the arrows in the image below each time and gently pull the bumper back toward you to insert your hitch pin and lock. After you have your hitch pin lock inserted, you need to replace the clips on the bumper and use the hitch as desired.  We recommend Option #1 as it will provide quicker access to the hitch receiver and prevent wear and tear on components of the car.

We hope these pictures and installation notes help clarify how EcoHitch for the 2015 Subaru WRX is able to easily accommodate all your favorite hitch accessories.  If you have questions or comments regarding this portion of the installation or any other, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly here or 877-373-9195.

  1. I would also recommend option 1 seeing as it is not visible. It sounds awful to "trim", but it really is not that big of a deal. I did it the day I bought by Eco Hitch and it works perfectly. Just make sure that you plan carefully when you trim and do not just measure with the naked eye. I almost made that mistake. Measure and trim, and measure again to make sure it fits snug, and can still be removed easily.

    1. Sure thing. Please send a request to ecohitch@tlcentral.com. We would be happy to send you pictures of the finished trimming and bike rack/locking pin installed in the hitch. We can also forward you the installation instructions for the hitch if you like. The instructions show the trimming area as well as an optional method of removing two clips to access the hitch pin.
